In 2003 a small group of IT professionals got together to form SiteGround as an alternative to using the hosts that they had encountered as regular customers in the marketplace. SiteGround is a privately-owned company.

Company and Services
SiteGround has two offices in the US: in Humble, Texas and in New York City. Its European offices are in Sofia, Bulgaria. SiteGround mainly provides web hosting for individuals and small business and looks after somewhere in the region of 150,000 sites.

SiteGround offers Linux-based shared, VPS and dedicated web hosting packages, as well as reseller hosting. It also offers e-commerce solutions, for those looking to start an online shop. The shared hosting plan – called the Super Hosting Package – comes with a generous 750GB disk space, 7,500GB traffic allowance, free website design software, a free domain and unlimited email accounts.

Three types of VPS hosting are also offered, as well as four managed dedicated server options. The company claims to use extremely fast and reliable servers and quotes a 99.9% uptime, although this is not guaranteed. Technical support is mostly handled by the European office and is available 24/7 by email.

As an avid supporter of open source software, SiteGround offers hosting which includes several free applications such as Joomla, Drupal and WordPress – making it potentially a good choice for web designers and bloggers who favor this type of software.

In both 2007 and 2008 Best Host Directory selected SiteGround as the ‘Best Web Hosting Company’. The directory’s awards are compiled from customer reviews.

Server Location
The servers for SiteGround’s shared hosting are in Houston, Texas, while those for VPS and dedicated hosting are in either Chicago, Illinois or Ashburn, Virginia (a suburb of Washington DC).
