6 Ways We’d Like to See cPanel Improved
Let’s get one thing right: we love cPanel.
But like all software, it’s not perfect – yet.
Here are some things we’d like to see done differently in a future version.
1. The Welcome Screen
The welcome screen in cPanel can be overwhelming. Log in and you’re immediately hit with dozens of icons, all labelled with very small text.
It’s an inefficient way of presenting cPanel’s powerful functions.
Categorisation and a better navigation sytem would be a huge improvement.
2. Accessing WHM
Logging in to WHM and cPanel is more difficult than it should be. There’s little crossover.
Even the login URLs are different, as are the usernames and passwords – and even the ports.
This makes it difficult to administrate sites quickly.
While we understand the security risks of logging in to cPanel with the root password, it’s tempting just to save time because switching between them is so cumbersome.
3. Lack of Mobile Interface
Try to log in to cPanel on your smartphone.
Even though the interface scales down neatly enough to be usable, it’s far from pretty.
4. Task Separation
Every task has a separate application. Sometimes, there’s no good reason for this.
FTP control, email accounts, file management; functions are split across different icons in cPanel, and that slows us down.
5. Inefficiency
If you’re using CPanel with WHM on a VPS, you need at least 512 MB RAM.
Using cPanel or Plesk in a resource-restrictive environment could be a bad idea.
6. Skinning
No matter which of the in-built skins we use for cPanel, it still seems to be ugly. It’s a very modern tool that looks very old-fashioned.
The only way around this is to create a heavily modified custom skin. But shouldn’t that come with the application?
cPanel: We Still Love it
We still enjoy using cPanel, but we think it’s ripe for some improvements.
