Website hosting, just like any other purchase or service, just doesn’t work out sometimes. Like most guarantees, the money-back guarantees offered by many hosting providers come with an assortment of addenda, contingencies and complications in the fine print that belie the claims set in banner text in the advertisement. As a rule, the validity of the guarantee will hinge on two things: the plan you’ve selected, and the amount of time you’ve been with your host. Some require a one- or even two-year commitment for a 30-day money-back guarantee, while others may offer a 90-day money-back guarantee but limit said guarantee to their most basic plans. Some hosts offer no-questions-asked cancellation at anytime, with a promise to return your unused (read as: prorated) fees for your current billing cycle, but only offer a full refund if you cancel within 30 days of signing up. Clearly, ironing out the particulars of your host’s guarantee is a matter of some urgency, and best sorted before the first month of hosting has passed.

Most guarantees don’t include fees for hardware, dedicated servers, extended support, “administrative fees” or domain name purchases. In fact, if you register your domain when you purchase your hosting and then decide to move on, you’ll most likely get to keep your domain, but have the associated registration fees deducted from whatever refund you’re receiving on your unused hosting. You’ll also have to wait approximately 60 days for your domain to be freed up for use with another host (but you can change your nameservers at your new host to retain access to your site during this time).

When you sign up for hosting, take the time to familiarize yourself with the fine print at the bottom of your host’s money-back guarantee. It won’t make the cancellation process or the search for a new host any less frustrating, but it can help you get the best possible refund if things go sour.
