Apollo Hosting Introduction

Apollo Hosting is an independent web hosting company based in the US with a focus on shared web hosting. It has been in operation since 2001 and offers shared hosting and VPS hosting packages suited to small to medium sized businesses.

Hosting Hosting Plans

Apollo Hosting has kept its hosting plans simple with the option to buy SSL certificates, a backup service, SiteLocks and a professional SEO service on the side.

There are a total of five plans available through Apollo Hosting: two Linux based shared hosting plans, one Windows hosting plan and two VPS hosting plans.

Shared hosting is priced based on the length of the hosting contract you purchase – one or two years. The greater length of time you commit to, the cheaper the monthly charge is.

  • The Starter plan allows for one domain name, one SQL database, 50 GB disk space and 500 GB bandwidth.
  • The Prime plan allows for unlimited domain names, disk space and bandwidth. It lets customers host up to 50 SQL databases and comes with a free shopping cart and a free domain name.

Windows hosting is also available on a one or two-year plan. This comes with a free personalized domain name and allows for unlimited hosted domain names. Customers get unlimited bandwidth and disk space, a free shopping cart and website builder.

The Apollo Hosting VPS plans are both Linux based and are only available on a yearly basis.

  • The VPS plan provides 10GB disk space, 1000 GB bandwidth and 256 MB RAM (burstable up to 1 GB). This plan allows for 10 websites and provides one dedicated IP address.
  • The VPS Pro plan comes with 60 GB disk space, 2000 GB bandwidth and 512 MB RAM (burstable up to 1 GB). This allows for 100 websites and provides 1 dedicated IP.

There is also an affiliate plan and a referral program. The company also offers a product for resellers.

Hosting Uptime/Downtime

The Apollo Hosting data centres are based in two locations in Boston, USA and are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The data centres are backed up with a UPS diesel generator to ensure that they continue running in the event of a power cut.

Apollo Hosting does not make any claims or provide any guarantees when it comes to website uptime.

Apollo Hosting Support

Apollo Hosting customers are supported through an online support console, telephone and live chat tools. The team is available 24 hours a day, although it is unclear where the support is based.

Customers also have access to a knowledge base, user guides and a range of tutorials to help them find the information that they need. There doesn’t appear to be a Twitter feed or a Facebook page for customers to interact with the company, so social media support is out. There’s also no forum for customers to interact or share information.

Apollo Hosting in the News

Apollo Hosting have been in existence for over 10 years now, but there has been little attention paid to the company in the press. There are no news articles, good or bad regarding the company in the tech news channels such as ARSTecnica or CNet.

Hosting Control Panel

The control panel brand is often a really important feature for web hosting customers, but Apollo Hosting provide little information on the control panel they offer. I did a little detective work, and the tutorials section on the support pages do provide an overview of a shared hosting control panel which looks like an in-house control panel. The interface appears to be fairly basic, but it does seem to cover most of the key elements of a decent control panel.

VPS customers appear to get the Plesk control panel for administering their sites.

Hosting Extras

Apollo Hosting provides a range of freebies to encourage customers to sign up. These include generous Google Adword credits and Yahoo credits, a free toll free phone number (for US businesses only), free shopping carts and domain names.

Apollo Hosting also supports a range of plugins such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Perl, phpBB, ZenPhoto and more.

Hosting Money Back Guarantee / Cancellation Policy

Apollo Hosting does offer a 30-day money-back guarantee for unsatisfied customers. As you would expect, this doesn’t include domain registration fees, setup fees or any other additional services that have been purchased.

Whilst this is fairly standard for most shared hosting, Apollo also provide this guarantee for their VPS hosting too.

Beyond the money-back guarantee, customers can cancel their account early, but they will incur a charge for doing so.

Hosting Summary

Apollo Hosting is a relatively run-of-the-mill web hosting company with little to make it stand out from the crowd. I was disappointed not to see a branded control panel or an uptime guarantee.

All services appear to be geared more towards customers looking to host eCommerce sites; most plans provide eCommerce tools and Google and Yahoo credits to help get started, with customers having the option to purchase professional SEO services as an extra. As such, the company may have a niche, but some aspects of its service let it down.

I used Apollo once, the initial impression was that they were perfect for VPS hosting. I was wrong… Anytime I connect through RDP, It’s always down… They may be "okay" for website hosting, but not VPS Hosting.

I just canceled service after 5 years. We used to be very happy with their VPS Hosting. But they were purchased a few months ago and the data center was moved.

The move itself was managed terribly. They set weekend dates for the move and postponed last minute on 3 occasions. The last time, they suddenly had the brilliant idea to migrate on a Tuesday????

So we were down for a Full 24 hours while they migrated all VPS at once. They picked a ridiculous time to migrate, and they did it very poorly. They should have done a portion at a time and had a real strategy.

Any 24 hour downtime is completely ridiculous with business hosting. Then we started to have outages under their new datacenter. Turns out they have unknown hardware problems (they claim).

Our VPS had 4 or 5 serious outages, some for 12+ hours. Again, completely unacceptable. now trying to reach support is such a painful experience.

They outsource their front line call center overseas. You can imagine the nightmare that is now Apollo support. They have a VPS support line – supposedly "experts".

I called to have our host name changed. They promised to escalate to someone who could do it and I would have a call back in 2 hours to confirm. 24 hours later nothing was done and no callbacks. That was the straw that broke the camels back.

I just changed to a new provider (WiredTree.com) and I am thrilled. What a breath of fresh air… and you know what…

shock of all shocks… our web site now stays up!! Imagine that.

I have been with Apollo Hosting for more than five years and the problems have minimal. Their customer service is less than it was. I would recommend Apollo to any small business.

I did some research on this host and found lots of good reviews so I gave this host a try. Their support was very helpful they helped me on how to move my site from my old host to their server. I really like the control panel it’s really easy to navigate and also mobile friendly so I can access the control panel on my mobile. I recommend everyone to try this host you’ll never regret this!

I’ve been with Apollo Hosting for many years in a shared hosting account and I’m happy with them. The servers are good and uptime is very good. Several of my domains have moderate traffic (more than 1000 visitors a day) and are hosted out of the same shared hosting account.

The websites seem great and fast. As a web developer, I love many of the features in their Control Panel. I’ve found setting up scripts and applications usually to be a breeze.

Their support has also been wonderful, and I haven’t had to call much. I called them when I needed some customized Apache server settings and they were great!

Their customer service is horrible and imap email will put any business out of business. After 8 months of struggle and "customer disservice" i decided to shop around for a better webhosting provider.

Apollo is truly a Terrible service provider. They frequently implement changes to your account without any notification. Then you stop receiving email for days.

And when they move from one server to another, they lose the whole configuration – all your old email, all the forwarding addresses you have configured, etc. It’s really a joke – I can’t think of a worse provider I’ve ever heard of (OK, maybe earthlink ISP is worse). They don’t even try to provide a smooth transition – they just start you off on a new server, new UI, lost configuration.

For almost a year I was receiving one of their other customer’s email. I reported this several times before they fixed it. The support staff just doesn’t care – they seem to be overwhelmed by the volume, and they are clearly very used to abuse.

The only positive side is that apollo is so insignificant that most corporate firewalls don’t block it like they block godaddy, gmail, etc. Use any other provider but apollo!!!!
