DataKL Introduction
Founded in 2006, DataKL is a Malaysian own and operated hosting company that offers shared and reseller hosting for business and individuals. They’ve since expanded to add colocation services in their datacentre as well as dedicated server options to their repertoire.
They’re perfect for those companies who are looking for a discount hosting solution, but who want a quality hardware product at the same time.
Services & Specializations
DataKL offers shared, reseller, dedicated and colocation services. Their shared plans all include:
Their higher tier plans come with more bandwidth and storage as well as more add- on domains. Plus, they cover all the major programming languages and technical features that you’d expect from a hosting company, meaning developers should be right at home with DataKL. All of the DataKL accounts are hosted on enterprise grade SATA drives for improved security and storage efficiency.
Their reseller accounts are much the same, except that each account can host far more domains.
With excellent hardware and plenty of 1-click installs for all the common scripts, DataKL’s offering should appeal to a wide range of webmasters and developers. If server location in the South Pacific is essential to your business, DataKL is an excellent option.
Infrastructure and Datacenters
DataKL is a LAMP host running CentOS or CloudLinux and using either dual or quad-core Intel processors. Their datacentre in Kuala Lumpur is a totally controlled server environment, with air conditioning, humidity control, heating, CCTV, a fire detection and suppression system, and 24/7 building and network monitoring. For power, they use a redundant UPS back up plus a generator.
Support and Customer Service
DataKL offers customer support with a knowledgebase loaded with tutorials and guides and a ticketing system. For live support, they have Twitter and Facebook, with remarkably quick responses on both. They also do have a number you can call, but it’s only available Monday to Friday.
They also have an announcement system for any changes or network problems that might come up. Finally, they have a blog, but it hasn’t been updated since 2013. Naturally, their phone support is located in Kuala Lumpur. They also have addition help services which you can buy hourly as you need them.
Security & Backups & Server Monitoring:
For security, DataKL protects all their accounts with SpamAssassin, protected directories, and ClamAv Antivirus software. They also offer backup and restore utilities for all their plans which include daily, weekly, and monthly backups. Their servers are monitored 24/7 at their datacentre.
Uptime Guarantee
DataKL guarantees 99.5% uptime. They measure this over a 90 day period. This also excludes scheduled maintenance and mass-network problems, like a backbone issue. It’s not clear what happens should they fail to uphold their guarantee.
Billing & Payment Policies
DataKL accepts payment via major credit cards and PayPal. Customers are billed either monthly or yearly, but there’s no discount for paying yearly. You can cancel any time. If you’ve pay ahead though, half of your unused portion is kept at an administration fee.
If you fail to pay on time, then you’re charged a late fee and your account is suspended. Suspended accounts can be deleted after 60 days.
30 Day Money Back Guarantee
DataKL offers a 30 day money back guarantee if you cancel within those 30 days. This refund excludes and setup fees or domain registrations.
Conclusion
All in all, DataKL is a pretty standard LAMP hosting company. While they might not excel in any one area, their wide use of open source software, their distribution of Softaculous and Fantastico access, and their quick social media response system for questions means that for low-intensity shared hosting, they’re a good choice.
If higher end shared hosting or dedicated hosting is more what you’re after though, then other competitors will likely provide the same software solutions but with more transparent legal agreements, more fair cancellation policies, and better customer support. However, it’s extremely hard to find better hardware than DataKL’s low latency datacentre for the price.
