Name.com Introduction

Name.com is based in Denver, Colorado, and has been providing domain name registration and hosting since 2003. They are a wholly owned subsidiary of Rightside. They are an ICANN-accredited domain name registrar, and they aim to provide world-class customer service and great prices for domain registration, hosting, and website building.

Services and Specializations

Name.com offers three levels of shared hosting plans, based on the number of websites you want to host and the resources you require. These range from a starter package that is best for a single website, with a fixed amount of disk space, bandwidth, email accounts, and MySQL databases, all the way to their top tier package, designed for unlimited sites, with unlimited disk space, bandwidth, email accounts, and databases. The top package also includes an SSL certificate, which is available as an add-on for the other plans for an additional fee.

All Name.com hosting packages include cPanel, Enterprise Web Stats for monitoring traffic, unlimited FTP accounts, a web-based file manager, spam protection, PHP 5, automated nightly backups, and over 50 pre-installed scripts. They also feature phpmyadmin for database management, secure email encryption, MySQL 5, Perl 5.8, Git and Python 2.6 language support. The included email hosting allows unlimited forwards, unlimited auto-responders, and an enterprise webmail interface.

If you don’t need all of those features, Name.com also offers Website Builder packages that are solely for designing and hosting your website. Packages range from small website plans that offers a fixed number of pages and limited storage to large sites plans with unlimited pages and storage. While these do offer a simple alternative to traditional hosting, unless you’re terrified of using a CMS to build your site, installing WordPress on one of their standard hosting packages will be much more versatile and cost-effective.

If WordPress is all you need, they also have WordPress hosting, which can be very cost-effective. All of their WordPress plans features one-click installation, unlimited storage and bandwidth, daily backups, and full support for WP themes and plugins. Everything but their entry plan also includes email.

Name.com also offers email-exclusive hosting plans, for customers who do not need a web presence (or already have one), but need email for their own domain. They offer a range of plans depending on the number of personalized email addresses you require.

I remember before hiring the services of this company, an advisor of them told me that his support was better than GoDaddy, at that time I believed them and decided to give them a chance because he had already had several bad experiences with GoDaddy, but I’m wrong it was a big disappointment. A Ticket to emergencies reported from one day in the morning and spend the day and not show their faces. Almost 100,000 lost data from my MySQL database by an internal fault of them never gave me an explanation, which fell several times a day.

As I did reports to support 4 times, and never a ticket was answered with an explanation. In Name.com Fan Page on Facebook I was told that a consultant had already sent a reply, and it was false. It is a shame.

Name.com has been my registrar of choice for some time because of the range of tools they offer for managing domains (domain "nabber", aligning expiry dates and so on). As I have over 50 domains to manage this has made my life considerably easier. To simplify things further I decided to host my websites at Name too.

Once I had learned my way around cPanel moving the sites was painless. My one call to support was answered and resolved quickly, although time difference between Europe and US makes it somewhat inconvenient. Thus, with some reluctance, I have decided to move hosting away from Name to a European based operation.

Support and Customer Service

Name.com has a dedicated customer support staff available to assist you over the phone during standard business hours and through email from 6am to 10pm, Mountain Standard Time. Support requests sent via email will be responded to within 1 business day. They also have an extensive knowledgebase available online with step by step instructions for many installation and setup processes.

Security and Backups

All hosting plans include automated nightly backups. While these can protect your site in case of corruption or a system issue, it is always recommended that you maintain your own, separate backup files. This way you can keep several weeks or even months of backup, for potential issues that extend beyond your host’s backup retention period.

Name.com hosting accounts include a free, optional 2-step verification process to prevent any unauthorized access to your account. Once enabled, after you enter your user name and password, you will be prompted to enter a security code, which is sent to your smartphone.

Uptime Guarantee

Name.com offers a 99.9% uptime guarantee.

Billing and Payment Policies

Packages are available with monthly or annual payment plans, but you will receive a substantial discount with an annual plan. New hosting plans include a free domain registration for the first year, which is provided as a discount off of the standard domain registration fee. Payments can be made using PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.

Hosting plans include a 30-day money back guarantee. If you cancel within the first thirty days, you will receive a full refund, minus the cost of domain registration.

Conclusion

Name.com aims to be an easy, low-cost destination for domain registration and web hosting. This can be particularly appealing if you don’t want to mess around with updating nameservers and DNS setting. It is also an appealing option for WordPress hosting. For general web hosting, they are comparable to most other low-cost, shared hosting plans. However, if you are looking for a starter package, with plans to move to a private server in the future, you will have to find another host when it comes time for that transition. Likewise, if you’re looking for the added security of VPS or dedicated hosting right now, you will need to look elsewhere.

While they may not be breaking any grounds in terms of hosting options, Name.com does offer a unique community experience. They want you to know the people beyond their product, so they post profiles of their support, sales, and technical teams, and their pets. The customer support images you see on their website are not stock photos, like most companies use, but pictures of their actual team. While this may not make their servers any more powerful, it is a good indication that they support their team members; and a well-supported and appreciated team usually provides far better support for their customers.
