GoDaddy Offers Grid Hosting
GoDaddy, the largest shared hosting provider in North America, has launched a grid hosting service.
It’s now in direct competition with Media Temple for an audience when it comes to this specific type of hosting.
How do they compare?
Grid Hosting: GoDaddy vs Media Temple
Both providers offer roughly the same plans at a similar price point.
- GoDaddy allows you to host an unlimited number of domains where Media Temple limits you to 100.
- Media Temple has no specific limit on email storage and allows 1000 email accounts, but GoDaddy allows only 100 email accounts and a bizarrely low 100 MB of email storage.
- GoDaddy offers a variety of advertising credits with Google AdWords, Facebook’s in-house ad program and others. Media Temple does not.
- Media Temple has clear expertise in grid hosting, plus a very robust system for handling MySQL databases.
- Media Temple also offers 1,000 GPUs, or processing units, per month; GoDaddy’s is unlimited, with the usual set of vague disclaimers.
Who’s Better?
The main reason to go with GoDaddy right now is for an easier transition to a grid setup. But Media Temple’s better established.
While we’re excited GoDaddy is offering an alternative, other hosts will be watching and will no doubt offer their own solutions in time – and without the unclear T&Cs.
There is a third option, of course. Many people will be better off with a regular cloud hosting plan.
