What is FTP?

FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is a standard method used for online file management. Most hosting providers include support for FTP as a basic component of their hosting packages, as FTP is commonly used to upload and edit the files that make up user websites and applications.

The first version of the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) was created way back in 1971, when the Internet itself was in its infancy and the World Wide Web was merely a distant dream. Yet FTP remains an essential tool for anyone working in the electronic information sphere, and even the most “hands off” business owner may have occasion to use FTP in managing their Web site or media library.

Commonly accessed through either a dedicated client such as Filezilla, or by typing the FTP server directly into your browser (e.g. FTP://yoursite.com), FTP access for end users (i.e., site owners and managers) works just like any other system with a username and password combination. Once the server authenticates your information, you’ll be taken to a file view that’s similar to what you’d see if you browsed your own hard drive, except the files and directories you’re using are located on your server instead of your PC.

Using FTP lets you manually add, download, edit or delete files from your server to modify your website. You can add pages, remove or replace multimedia content, and even download your whole website to make a backup copy.
