What is Microsoft Indexing Hosting?

Older versions of Microsoft Windows included indexing software for speeding up file searches called Microsoft Indexing Service. Now server search is built into Microsoft SharePoint.

Microsoft Indexing Service was a program that scanned files on Windows servers and client computers, then indexed the data. It created content and property indexes. This let users search those documents by keywords and phrases. It is no longer supported in Windows XP. As of January 2014, indexing is accomplished within Microsoft SharePoint 2013.

SharePoint is an Enterprise solution. Over the years it has grown into a way for people to work collaboratively. You can share and organize information, create project sites with apps, mailboxes, and file sharing, and even build websites. SharePoint is also integrated with other Microsoft products, such as Office 365, Yammer, and Exchange.

Search in SharePoint is built similarly to Bing. The results page includes filtering options and hover panels with live page previews that you can interact with. It returns personalized results based on your past usage. In addition to searching for indexed documents, you may search people and related content, or view people results for a search term.

Search in SharePoint 2013 includes updated ranking models for better search result ranking. Content crawls are continuous, so the search index is always fresh. The overall architecture is different from previous versions and very different from older incarnations of server search. Administrators must install and configure search. Microsoft recommends that administrators learn about the search components and processes to help product the most effective search results.

Federated search is an alternative search option in SharePoint. It allows you to point search to an external content repository and return results on the result page in SharePoint. You can even use a Web search engine. This saves on capacity because you won’t have a content index to store.

Some Web hosting companies offer dedicated SharePoint hosting plans. These plans are managed so you don’t have to manage your own server. Some include SharePoint training, so you can use it more effectively. They also provide varying levels of support.

If your business needs an enterprise-level project management solution with integrated robust search capabilities that works well with other Microsoft products, SharePoint might be the right choice for you. SharePoint hosting plans will take that solution one step further by adding management and support, if you need it.
