I’m currently using shared hosting with Dreamhost, but I’m looking for a VPS. Low(ish) cost is fairly important, as is the option to cover surges of traffic and scale up capabilities. Any advice would be brilliant!

  2. WhoIsHostingThis.com is hosted on a Servint VPS, who are definitely worth investigating. Customer support is very good. However, I don’t think they are ideal for less technical users – if you’re used to DreamHost’s control panel, WHM and CPanel will be something of a culture shock.

  3. I’ve heard good things about ServInt as well.

Right now I am using KnownHost for my VPS and have been happy with the uptime/service. I’ve gotten Diggs and big traffic surges and my server has been delightfully reliable.

I had a VPS with PowerVPS for years, and thought they were a good company, but eventually left because new customers were getting better servers at a lower cost.

Like the previous poster mentioned DreamHost’s control panel is very easy to use compared to cPanel/WHM/Virtuozzo (IMO) — making DH’s own VPS service (DreamHost PS) a viable option, especially if you are already a Dreamhost shared customer.

I think with any VPS, you need to consider how much maintenance you are able/willing to do yourself, and make sure your VPS provider offers management (upgrades, security patches, etc) that matches your skillset.

I’ve seen some really cheap VPS offers (below $20/mo), but they usually don’t offer the same level of management or resources a more fairly priced VPS does.

  4. I’d personally steer clear of DreamHost’s PS option, whilst we’re on the subject. The cost is comparable to the likes of Servint, but you still have no phone support or any of the features you get with a ‘grown up’ VPS.

That said, DreamHost PS has two very cool features:

    1. You get to keep their control panel.
    2. You can scale your package (ram + storage) in real time

  5. For anyone who is technical and wants a bare-bones VPS without a control panel, I’d highly suggest Xtraordinary Hosting in the UK and SliceHost in the US. I’ve got VPSes with them both.

Performance and uptime have been excellent. My Slicehost VPS has been up for over a year (admittedly, it’s not doing much). The tech support at Xtraordinary is really good; the guys are clearly Linux geeks who know their stuff. At £15+VAT and $20 per month, respectively, they’re not super cheap, but you can get a lot of power out of a small VPS running lean and mean!

  6. I would recommend to buy a VPS with WHM/cPanel. There are many out there but don’t make the price a criteria. Generally a Good VPS can start from $30. Support is very crucial for VPS, so look for a host which can offer you chat support and fast ticket response time guarantee.
    Worth a look

I currently use 1&1 hosting and they’re not that bad. Their customer service isn’t but the best but their server support is actually pretty good.
