Hurricane Electric Introduction

Hurricane Electric is a US-based internet service provider specializing in IP Transit and colocation hosting. Founded in 1994, they now maintain the world’s largest IPv6 backbone, based on the number of connected networks. In addition to these services, they have offered web and email hosting for over 15 years.

Services and Specializations

Hurricane Electric provides fully-managed dedicated hosting. Rather than presenting a list of customizable servers to choose from, Hurricane Electric works with you one-on-one to determine your needs and provide a reliable quote. After you’ve told them your specifications, along with what OS you need (they provide Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, or Sun Solaris) and any required software, they will set up the server for you. After your server has been set up and tested, all you have to do is transfer your website to it. After that, they will manage your server. They monitor servers daily, handle routine maintenance, and run scheduled checks to ensure your server performs correctly. If you prefer, you can also install your own operating system and/or manage the server yourself.

All dedicated servers are connected to Hurricane Electric’s multi-gigabit Ethernet connections. In addition to their standard setup and maintenance, they also offer several optional features, including root access, offsite storage, usage stats, backups, load balancing, and content distribution.

If you’re worried about the amount of energy your dedicated server will utilize, they also offer a Green Server, which utilizes energy efficient hardware to reduce your carbon footprint.

They also after 2 virtual private server (VPS) packages. Both include a static IP address, access to Hurricane Electric’s 10Gbps international backbone, redundant connections, MySQL database, Webalizer stats, SSL Certificate management, and managed hosting. Packages vary with regards to the number of included domains, storage space, and monthly transfer limits. Both plans are intended for business-level clients or high-traffic sites.

Hurricane Electric offers colocation services for every level of server requirements, whether you need cabinet space for a single server, a full cabinet, or space for thousands of servers. Their facilities provides power and access to your choice of 100Mbps, 1000Mbps, or 10Gigabit Ethernet.

Infrastructure

Hurricane Electric has 3 California-based datacenters, providing a total of nearly 250,000 square feet. The datacenters are monitored by an onsite staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each cabinet is individually locked and monitored by custom designed video surveillance. Facility access is secured through card key doors and biometric security.

Each datacenter utilizes multiple fiber optic, gigabit internet connections, a climate controlled environment, battery backup, and emergency generators.

While not particular to hosting, it is worth mentioning that their IP Transit network runs across North America, Europe, and Asia. It’s a self-healing network, which means if one connection fails, transit will be immediately picked up by another. They also have contracts with multiple other providers for backup transit, should additional support be needed to maintain connections.

Support and Customer Service

Technical support is available by phone or email.

Security and Backups

Hurricane Electric provides daily monitoring of your servers and automatically deals with any problems you may experience. If something should fail, they store spare hard drives, power supplies, and boards locally so they can quickly correct the issue. They also have additional RAM available to be added immediately if you wish to upgrade.

Backups are available as an optional service for dedicated servers. Backups can be sent to another disc or tape storage.

Billing, Payment, and Cancellation Policies

All accounts are invoiced monthly, and overdue accounts can be suspended or terminated at Hurricane Electric’s discretion. Customers can cancel their account at any time, via email, postal mail, or fax.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a web host that can provide blazing fast internet speeds, you’ve come to the right face. IP Transit and bandwidth is Hurricane Electric’s primary business, and when you host with them you get access to the world’s largest IPv6 internet backbone, with speeds up to 10Gb per second.

Hurricane Electric also makes hosting simple, even for business-class dedicated and VPS service, with fully-managed hosting plans. Simply tell them what you want, and they set it up for you. This is perfect for companies that don’t have the resources or expertise available to manage their own servers; however, it may not be ideal for an organization that wants completely control over their server environment, or who need to meet the highest security standards for their customer data.

Keep in mind, this is a business-class host. You won’t find any low-cost, personal website plans. In fact, aside from their two VPS plans, they don’t provide any pricing information on their site, because they prefer to work directly with their customers to assess their specific needs and provide an accurate price quote to fulfill all of those. That’s a very good thing if you don’t want to overpay for services you don’t need.
