Everything I look for in a host is here. They are not the bargain barrel host minimum $20/month plans. They are a high quality VPS linux flavor provider. The good $20 root access, quick reboots, virtual console access if your virtual server stops responding. Plus you can get a bigger VPS box on demand.

They have it all. I have had no issues in the 6+ months I have hosted with them. I use slice host for both personal and professional uses.

Inexpensive way to get a root linux VPS perfect for small non business critical projects, plus it is owned by Rackspace so you know they have the Brand behind them.

I love slicehost I would never use another VPS provider.

Slicehost is a fantastic hosting provider for the DIY geek or company with someone who knows what they are doing. It does require you to know what you are doing with a server; everything is up to you. For the experienced Sysadmin looking for an unmanaged system where you can get root access and a remote console, this is the place to be! If you don’t know what “root” is, or what a “remote console” is, then you should probably go with a managed provider somewhere else.

Slicehost support is fantastic (or, since they are a Rackspace company, should we say fanatical?) and is available in a variety of mediums. You can email, you can use a web portal, or you can even use a web-based real time chat. I have used all three methods and their staff is always amazingly helpful.

My one (and really, only) complaint is with respect to their billing system and it is really more of an edge-case problem. You can only keep one credit card on file and their system is not fully transactional. If you needed to make a partial payment on a different credit card than the one that is normally on file, you need to put that transaction in, potentially wait 24 hrs (charges only happen once every 24 hrs) to get a transaction approved email, and then change your card-on-file back to the original. If you don’t do this, it will charge whatever card happens to be on file right around the time the email gets sent out, so the results could be different than you expect. As of writing, it is impossible to keep one card on file and charge another temporarily, and it is impossible to put through two charges to different cards in a single 24 hr window. All that writing for just an edge case!

Many people who use Rackspace Cloud hosting may not realize that it is actually Slicehost. If you are going to use the full resources of a VPS (CPU/Memory/Disk vs Bandwidth) then I’d go with Slicehost over the Rackspace Cloud. If you only need CPU and Memory, but not really Bandwidth–or you have minimal CPU needs but high bandwidth needs, then using the Rackspace Cloud can be a good way to go since they meter bandwidth separately from the system itself.

At the end of the day, Slicehost is highly recommended.
